Feminist Africa 14: Rethinking gender and violence
Publisher: African Gender Institute, South Africa
Publication Date: Jan 2010
In this issue of Feminist Africa, a publication produced by the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town, the theme is ‘gender and violence’. The editorial, ‘Rethinking Gender and Violence’ by Jane Bennett discusses, among other things, a possible future where relationships between gender and violence are no longer situated within the context of dichotomised gendered identities. The articles in this address such topics as sexual violence in conflict (in the Congo, Yugoslavia, Rwanda, etcetera), 21st century African feminist debates on gender and violence, domestic violence in North Africa, and feminist development theory. A section entitled ‘In Conversation’ contains talks with Jane Bennett regarding the politics of masculinities studies and African feminisms; as well as talks with Yaliwe Clarke about Namibian peace building. This issue also profiles the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children in Cape Town.
