The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign – 2015
This BRIDGE Gender Update focuses on the 16-days of activism against gender-based violence campaign and highlights some key resources on the main thematic areas it focuses upon.
This special BRIDGE update highlights the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which runs annually from 25 November, the International Day Against Violence Against Women, until Human Rights Day on 10 December. This year it highlights the links between education, gender and militarism as ‘an encompassing patriarchal system of discrimination and inequality based on our relationships to power.’ Approximately half of the 58 million children of primary school age who do not have access to education live in conflict affected areas and girls and young women are the most negatively impacted.
What are the gendered impacts of militarism? How can we understand the role of sexual violence in conflict? What’s the role of women in peacebuilding? This collection of key readings includes practical guides, reports from civil society organisations, toolkits and academic research exploring issues of gender and militarism, including gender-based violence.
Throughout the 16 Days campaign, the Institute of Development Studies has been highlighting our work on sexual and gender-based violence, gender, education and militarism – as well as the work of our partners and friends around the world. Each day we have been be sharing something new – via this Storify – from academic research to blog posts and films.

Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) Dialogues
During the 16 Days of Activism, the IDS team and its global partners working on engaging men and boys, collective action and addressing sexual and gender based violence, has created a one-off blog series ‘SGBV Dialogues’. The series zooms in on a select number of issues from our work, and offers the opportunity to openly talk about SGBV and the successes and challenges connected to addressing it. New blog on the rights of refugee girls and boys

Conference on Justice, Wealth, Sex and Love – working with men and youth for equal rights, 9-10 Dec. Antigua, Guatemala
The main objective of the conference will be to provide tools for organisations in Latin America who intend to do strategic programmatic planning to work with men and boys for the promotion of equal rights. It also aims to strengthen links and alliances between agencies and civil society, and offer knowledge and good practice to bridge theory and action. The conference is organised by We Effect, Promundo, MenEngage and other civil society organisations and agencies. BRIDGE partners Sula Batsu have been part of the organising committee and will be participating and contributing as panellists.

Why gender matters at the international climate talks
BRIDGE has published two articles to mark the COP21 climate negotiations in Paris, both drawing on the Gender and Climate Change Cutting Edge Pack. The first looks at why it is vital that those making decisions on climate change do not ignore gender and the other gives five ideas of what COP21 negotatiators could do for gender equality.
